· Why do you think that the Ancient Mesopotamian's decided to change the writing system from just pictures (pictographs) to the cuneiform shapes?
· Who do you think would want to have a record of the buying and selling of barley? Why do people make or keep receipts?
· How did the change from pictures (direct representation) to cuneiform (abstract representation) affect who could use the system?
Using the cuneiform alphabet handout as a guide, practice writing your name using cuneiform.

Watch video clip: Hammurabi's Code
Activity: Understanding Hammurabi's Code. Read over the various misconducts and as a group determine a suitable punishment for each crime presented.
Compare your groups punishment with what was actually given during the time of King Hammurabi.
Read Text page 36 & bottom of pg 40-42 and then complete Blog Response #3 and questions 10-12.
Begin Letter to Hammurabi. Have students pick one of the codes found on page 41 of the text. Write a letter to the editor of the Babylonian Times (Hammurabi himself). In the letter, you must clearly state the code number they are discussing, their opinion of the code, and why they feel that way. If they disagree with the code, they should offer suggestions or an alternative for Hammurabi to consider. Generally, it is recommended that one signs a letter to the editor. Be creative.
